I have no revisions to my rationale (May 17)

My teaching style involves creating a learning environment that fosters student engagement, multiple modalities of learning, and applications to the real world. I feel that these principles will lead to a mutual respect between the students and the teacher, and allow me (the teacher) to create a connection with the students. These three tenets incorporate the multiple intelligences of learners. Student engagement involves the interpersonal intelligence. Multiple modalities of learning consists of the spatial, bodily, logistic, and visual intelligences. Application to the real world can be described using the naturalistic intelligence. I feel that if I keep these three tenets in mind while I create my lesson plan, I will be an impactful teacher. Conversely, if I overlook any of these teaching principles, I will not be able to achieve the objectives of my lesson.

My teaching style will consist of a partnership between the students and myself. Student engagement is one of the building blocks of this partnership. There are many different ways to engage students. One way is to encourage students to have an open dialogue about the lesson, even though it may push back your unit by a day. If students feel that the teacher values their ideas and beliefs, then they will be more receptive to hear what comes out of the teacher's mouth. Another way I will support student engagement is by creating activities that allow students to get out of their chair, whether it is to write something on the white board or act out DNA replication. It provides opportunities for students to understand a concept by using a different modality of learning. I feel that if I can supplement the student's notes with student engagement, I will be successful in achieving the objectives of the lesson.

Another way I will be able to create a connection with the students is to use multiple modalities of learning in each lesson. Unfortunately, it is very easy for a teacher to have most of a lesson utilize the auditory modality of learning, without much focus on the other two. If this occurs, students will take notes, like zombies, or not be interested in the lesson at all. Using the other modalities of learning (tactile and visual), in combination with student engagement, will create an environment that will peak a student's interest. In my unit on Nucleic Acids, I had students answer questions while they watched quick videos, write answers to questions on the board, and actively participate in lab activities. All students are different, and all students learn differently. By fostering student engagement that encompasses all three modalities of learning, students will more readily meet the objectives of the lesson.

Another way I will be able to create a connection with my students is to answer the following questions when I create my lesson plan: Why do I need to learn this? How is this information relevant to me? In creating my lesson plans, I need to find a way to connect the meat of the lesson with real world implications and applications. If I foster student engagement and use multiple modalities of learning in my lesson, but I fail to allow the students to understand the real world importance of this lesson, I have wasted their time as well as my time. Real world application builds from the other two tenets. In my unit on Nucleic Acids, I connected the structure of DNA with a lab activity that had students use technology to link an unknown sample of DNA with a known sample of DNA. I think students are able to understand real world implications if they are able to create a product through real world application.(inquiry-based learning). By using inquiry-based learning, I will be able to allow the student to critically evaluate a real-world problem and create a real-world solution.

My teaching style will be based on a partnership between students and me, as stated above. Each lesson will be based on building off of a student's prior knowledge and applying it to real world questions. My style of teaching will also have me evaluate the students using multiple modalities of evaluation. I will evaluate the students understanding of the lesson objectives through tests, handouts for homework, projects, as well as inquiry-based labs.

I thought this was a significantly better expression of your approach to teaching than you started with. I look forward to reading your updated version in the Spring! - fogleman fogleman Dec 23, 2009
